Though resentful of his exile, Hunter still loved Wakanda and thus tempered his resentment of T'Challa to aid his country when needed. Making do on his youthful promise to advance Mohannda, Hunter conspired with Mohanndan terrorists to assassinate the progressive Prime Minister Jani Schonland in order to take control of the country for himself. Hunter and the Hatut Zeraze reappeared to assist in the battle against the Cotati. T'Challa was victorious, however, and told Hunter that he had been rejected by Wakanda, which had no place for a murderer like him. T'Challa and the NYPD set a trap for Hunter, and the two battled, Hunter intending to kill T'Challa and finally become the Black Panther. Īfter T'Challa made Mena Ngai's Vibranium inert and abdicated the throne to Shuri, becoming the protector of Hell's Kitchen, Hunter began killing women there to once again draw T'Challa out. He later became an ally of sorts to T'Challa's temporary replacement Kasper Cole. Seeing that various organizations connected to the United States government were conspiring to destabilize Wakanda, Hunter kidnapped T'Challa's former fiancee Monica Lynne to attract the King's attention. Hunter and the Hatut Zeraze, however, gave T'Challa their full support against the Hyenas, and then against N'Jadaka when he initiated his first attack on the nation. When the Hyena Clan, led by their estranged half-brother Jakarra, began to conspire with Doctor Doom against Wakanda, T'Challa quickly pointed the blame on Hunter. When N'Jadaka returned to Wakanda after years enslaved to Klaw and then studying at MIT in the United States of America, Hunter secretly greeted him, wondering if he might be a good fit for the Hatut Zeraze. Still, the two met in Mohannda for one more race, where Hunter expressed a wish to see the country of his birth become as advanced as Wakanda. Deciding not to fight with the King, Hunter then left Wakanda in search of revenge on Klaw, and continued to control the Hatut Zeraze from exile. Believing that his brother would make a weak ruler of Wakanda, Hunter even attempted to prevent T'Challa from competing in the Tournament for the throne: however, with their sister Shuri's help, he was thwarted, and T'Challa ascended to the throne, after which he dissolved the Hatut Zeraze for their brutal methods. Among the conflicts Hunter created or contributed to was the Oromo conflict which displaced many young Ethiopians, including T'Challa's close friend Ororo Munroe. With this power, Hunter sought to strengthen Wakanda by weakening its neighbors, sending the Hatut Zeraze to sow unrest. After their father's passing T'Challa went on walkabout throughout Africa, and their uncle the regent S'Yan gave more power to Hunter to maintain peace. When Ramonda was kidnapped back to South Africa by Anton Pretorius and T'Chaka was soon after killed by the mercenary Ulysses Klaw, Hunter was orphaned for a second time, and had only T'Challa left to blame for his problems. Not even T'Challa knew the full extent of Hunter's early involvement with the Wakandan secret police, the Hatut Zeraze. Hunter's white complexion was also a boon to the Wakandan royal family, though, and T'Chaka would send him on missions to places overseas that were easier for Europeans to access. When the family visited South Africa to honor Ramonda's deceased mother, the country's apartheid segregation policy forced him to separate from his brother and parents, which fueled his feelings of otherness. In their youths, T'Challa and Hunter were close, and would compete in childish games like footraces. He was consoled by his father's second wife Ramonda, who was also a foreigner, having been born and raised in South Africa, and the two grew as close as mother and son despite sharing no blood. Hunter was raised a Wakandan, but constantly felt that he was seen as an outsider by the rest of the nation. They sought King T'Chaka to settle the argument, who solved the situation by adopting the child for himself. The sole survivor, he was found by the Mtume family Pa Mtume, assuming they had angered the gods, wished to drown the child, but Ma, who hoped for their family to finally have a child of their own, wanted to adopt it. Hunter was born in the African nation of Mohannda, but was with his parents when they died in a plane crash over the bordering Wakanda. Hunter looking at T'Chaka and baby T'Challa
